Online there can be an overwhelming amount of information regarding starting your theatre career, be it places with audition notices, workshop postings, and many, many pop sites regarding resources you’ll need. Here is a short, but dependable, list of sites that have benefitted theatre artists and producers time and time again.

ACTORS:

Vancouver Actor’s Guide

  1. Their description: “Has been around since 1998, when there were very few easily accessible resources for people curious about the local entertainment industry... People wanted to know how to get started, what to watch out for, and to get connected with other performers for support, advice and ideas.” Popular for actors, directors and producers looking for, or looking to post casting stage and media projects. Also contains a robust list of resources for actors that are starting out, such as: local agencies, headshot photographers, and casting resources. Culturebrew.art (CBA)

  1. Managed by Visceral Visions, they describe CBA as: “a digital platform that will promote and foster intersectional interculturalism throughout the performing and media arts sector. Its central tool is a searchable database of Indigenous and Racialized Artists (IAGA) - actors, writers, musicians, dancers, filmmakers, directors, designers, composers, opera singers, stage managers, and other performing and media arts professionals.” They aim to connect both stage and media producers and companies with these artists on their platform and is accessible nationally. Canadian Dance Assembly

Each branch is umbrellas under providing online resources and holding in-person conferences/events (see “Ongoing and Yearly events” for more information on those) for Stage Managers, Tech directors and other theatre technicians, and production managers. Besides their conferences, handy information through their websites offer Masterclasses for professional development and a discussion series:

Artist Producer Resource

  1. An unprecedented online resource created by Generator. APR is described as: “a mentoring, teaching, and innovation incubator that expands the skills, tools, and competencies of independent artists, producers and leaders.”  For any artist having any producing questions, be it as an independent artist or a new theatre company/collective, APR allows for users to access those resources either by the search or exploration by topic function, or by creating a “checklist” that connects the user to the right resource. Have questions about accessibility for theatre? How do I make a production budget? Touring questions? Almost all of your questions can be answered here:

Toronto Alliance for Performing Arts (TAPA)

  1. A landing page with many links categorized under all aspects of producing for live productions. Albeit a Toronto-centric resource, some links that explain crowdfunding, offer templates for artist contracts, and list nationally recognized tech suppliers are great resources to have as a budding producer or production manager:

  1. This organization based in Toronto is home for Canadian theatre artefacts and documents. A wonderful place of inspiration for all theatre artists as it features online exhibitions and “The Legend Library,” a series of video interviews with iconic Canadian who helped pioneer what we know as Canadian Theatre:

Arts Alive Website

  1. Produced by the National Arts Centre, Arts Alive is an educational website that helps new theatre-makers (actors, directors, playwrights, production, designers etc.) navigate information about the various professions found in theatre. Ideal for those deciding to switch careers in theatre post-graduation or a place for additional learning around their career. Highlights include French translation for all resources, resources for dancers and choreographers for theatre, some great interviews from nationally recognized artists of the NAC, and an easily understandable breakdown of all roles within theatre:

  1. Podcast hosted by NAC English Theatre AD Jillian Keiley featuring Canadian theatre industry people talking about the Canadian theatre industry, giving insights into the culture, experiences, large questions, and social histories happening within theatre in Canada.
