Unions & Associations

Unions & Associations

Starting your career in Theatre, Television, or Film after school can be an exciting, but daunting experience. How will unions and associations help advance my career? When is the best time to join? Which union do I need to join if I have enough credits? Here are resources to help you understand unions and associations.

Canadian Actors' Equity Association (CAEA)

  1. A national association representing performers, directors, choreographers, fight directors, and stage managers who work professionally in theatre, opera, and dance. CAEA provides its members with benefits similar to other unionized groups (health insurance, RRSP packages, etc.) and services (advocating for their members if there are problems on certain productions, etc). It also creates various agreements with other organizations (PACT, ACTRA; see below) in order to make sure their artists are paid equitable wages. For more information visit their website and contact an agent:

UBCP/ACTRA

  1. The Union of British Columbia Performers is an autonomous branch of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artist (ACTRA), the national organization of professional performers working in the English-language recorded media in Canada, representing actors, stunt artists, voice artists, background performers, puppeteers, stand-ins, performance capture, hand models, dancers and choreographers. Similar to CAEA, but represents performers in film, TV, commercials, radio, and other recorded media. For more information visit their website:

Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC)

PGC describe themselves: “as a national arts service organization, we offer over twenty-five programs that promote and protect playwrights. Through this work, we also provide many opportunities for the public to access, explore, and enjoy the work of playwrights.” For both non-member writers and producers, this is a great resource to discover professional Canadian playwrights and their works (e.g. how to contact individual playwrights to ask about the rights to produce their play) and take advantage of their programming.
